The Heart of Healing: The Day One Society’s Board of Directors

Day One Society

For over 50 years, Day One Society has been a pillar of support for the Kamloops community and beyond, offering medical detox, counselling, and supportive housing. While the name of the organization has evolved from the Parent’s Alert Society to the Kamloops Alcohol and Drug Services Society and now Day One Society, its mission remains the same: to provide help, hope, and healing to those in need.

At the core of this mission lies Day One Society’s Board of Directors, a group of dedicated individuals who bring diverse talents, experiences, and compassion to their roles. Their work ensures that the organization continues to uphold its values of kindness, acceptance, commitment, creativity, and integrity.

As Board Chair Marilyn McLean explains, “The many talents and life experiences of our Board members ensure that discussions are thorough, fair, and inclusive of diverse viewpoints. Their hard work, leadership, and support are essential. The current Board’s dedication to the mission and vision of Day One Society is second to none.”

For Board members, their involvement is more than governance; it’s personal. Each of them brings a unique perspective shaped by their own experiences and commitment to the community.

Board member Ben Van Der Gracht sees his role as a way to support individuals at the start of their recovery journey. “I see medical detox as a necessary first step to begin a journey of recovery,” Ben shares. “If it helps people with a substance-use disorder take that first step, and they take further steps, then we all benefit. I want people who have an addiction to find health and safety and eventually become happy, peaceful, and useful. It’s better for our community and everyone who lives here when they do.”

For Carol Tennessy, joining the Board was a way to channel her concern for the community into meaningful action.

“When I was out and about in my community, I would see situations that dismayed and upset me. When I joined the Board, I really started to understand the enormous efforts being made by people who don’t see their work as a job—it’s a driven desire to improve the lives of others and our overall community. I’m proud and honoured to be on this Board.”

Shbaach Amanda Joe brings her lived experiences to her roles, making her contributions deeply personal. “Fulfilled. Being on the Board, my life is more fulfilled and meaningful. I’m blessed to play an active role in helping others with their healing journey,” Amanda shares.

“Never in my life would I have thought I’d overcome my alcoholism and be strong enough to empower someone else on theirs. This is not work for me; it’s also a part of my healing journey.”

For Bryan Pilbeam, the work of Day One Society reflects a profound need within the community. “As a Board member of Day One Society, I am honoured to be a part of this organization that provides life-changing experiences and serves people of all backgrounds and needs with dignity, professionalism, and sincere care. My only wish is that we could double our efforts and capacity. Our society needs this now more than ever.”

Beyond the ones mentioned here, there are other Board members who contribute their time, expertise, and passion, and their impact is still hugely important and impactful to Day One Society. Each member plays a crucial role in ensuring we continue to offer hope, healing and support to those who need it most.

Day One Society’s Board is a testament to the power of collaboration, compassion, and shared vision. These individuals work tirelessly to ensure that the organization continues to provide vital services to those in need, helping people take their first steps toward a brighter future.

Their stories reflect the essence of Day One Society: a community of hope, resilience, and unwavering support. Whether through governance, advocacy, or personal involvement, the Board plays a pivotal role in transforming lives—one day at a time.

Through their dedication, Day One Society continues to pave the way for healing, offering services, a sense of belonging, and possibility for all who walk through its doors.
